There is a problem regarding my Grandfather's Croix de Guerre.

The citation for his Croix de Guerre is at Regimental level yet the single star on the ribbon is not a bronze star but a silver one.

It may be that the wrong star was fixed to the ribbon when the Croix de Guerre was awarded.

However, my elder brother recalls two stars being on the ribbon at one point which suggests that my Grandfather may have received two citations, one at Regimental and one at Divisional level.

My Grandfather Charles Moucan was part of the 4eme Regiment de Tirailleurs Algeriens during the war.

Do the Divisional citations for the Croix de Guerre awarded to the 4eme Regiment de Tirailleurs Algeriens during the first world war still exist and if so, am I able to look at them to see whether my Grandfather did indeed receive a citation at Divisional level ?

Hello Andre,

It's possible to find the "citations" awarded to you Grandfather.
The "citations" are often written on a big book resuming all the career of all the french soldier. This book is in every Archive Departemental in France. To find your grand father you should told us, where he lived when he was 20 years old.

Cheers from France

Guillaume

PS: Sorry for my poor english

Hello André,

The best way for you to know everything about your grand'dad's decorations is to write to this adress :
BCAAM
Bureau des médailles militaires
Caserne Bernadotte
64000 PAU
France.
There you have to write all you know about him (name, date and place of birth, regiment number and so on).
They will give you all the citations around his medalls.
Write in french, and have a french adress for the answer...

Good luck,
Thierry.

Thanks Thierry,

The French address will not be a problem as I have family in France.

Hi,
Did you write your letter in English? It might take a little (much) more time  :pt1cable:
Regards
Alain
Edited: did you explore the war diary (JMO in French) of his regiment: http://www.memoiredeshommes.sga.de [...] GR_26_N_II

Recently I found many citations, eg
